The Need for Discernment – Pt.2

Subtitle: The Noble Bereans

By Roderick Breem

In Acts chapter 17 we find the Apostle Paul preaching the gospel in Thessalonica. Some believed and were added to the church. This filled the Jews with envy. The result was

But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.” (v.5)

On a side note, doesn’t this sound familiar? They “took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar…” This is happening day right here in America and we need to pray.

Moving on in Acts 17 we find a group of people Paul called Bereans. Listen, really listen to how they are described.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (v.11)

Isn’t that wonderful? They “received the word with all readiness of mind” and they “searched the scriptures daily.” The Greek word for “searched” carries the idea of discernment. It is the word anakrinō, meaning to “examine, search, judge, discern.”

If we are to have discernment we must learn to be like the Bereans, examining the Word with all readiness of mind.

It is also said of the Bereans that they were “more noble than those in Thessalonica.” (v.11) Noble simply means “well born.” I tell you those who have been born again are also well born. It is time for us to live noble lives, especially when it comes to searching the Holy Scriptures.
